What is MUN?

Model United Nations (MUN) is an educational simulation in which students take on the role of diplomats representing countries in the United Nations. In committees modeled after the UN, delegates debate global issues, draft resolutions, and work together to find cooperative solutions to real-world challenges.

The purpose of MUN is to promote understanding of international relations, diplomacy, and the UN system, while also helping students build essential 21st-century skills such as public speaking, negotiation, critical thinking, and collaboration. Beyond debating, MUN fosters empathy, global awareness, and a sense of responsibility in addressing pressing world issues.

Traditionally, MUN conferences have been organised in a decentralized way by schools, universities, and student-led initiatives, often as part of their educational and cultural mission. In recent years, however, profit-oriented providers have also entered the field, creating a more diverse, but also more commercialised, landscape of MUN conferences.
